The myth that older whisky is always better whisky continues to be a hard preconception to shake, but Ardbeg is doing its part to set the record straight with the latest edition to its permanent lineup, Wee Beastie. This single malt is age-stated at only five years old, and those years have been spent in a mix of ex-bourbon and ex-Oloroso sherry casks. On the nose, there’s plenty of Ardbeg’s familiar sea foam and sweet smoke, but also some brighter charred lemon and baked apple notes. The palate is oily and rich for such a young Scotch with plenty of gunpowder and salty ocean air. There’s a lush sweetness here, too, with notes of candy apple, ginger snaps, and overcooked caramel. It all finds a surprising balance culminating in a gently smoky finish accented by a touch of cherry throat lozenges.
