This Kentucky straight bourbon, a crown jewel in the lineup from Bardstown’s Heaven Hill, is distilled from a recipe of 78% corn, 10% rye, and 12% malted barley. It is also one of the few “bottled-in-bond” bourbons on the market, meaning that it was distilled in one distilling season at one distillery, bottled at 100 proof, and aged at least four years. Henry McKenna, at 10 years old, is more than double the legal requirement for that designation, but that extra time in the barrel shows in its dark copper color and an aroma full of butterscotch and baking spice. The palate is oily and rich with brown sugar, clove, and seasoned oak and culminates in a warming finish that lingers with notes of cinnamon and buttery caramel.
