After a two-year hiatus, Michter’s US*1 Barrel Strength Rye has finally returned to shelves. Why the delay? Waiting for the whiskey to reach its prime probably had a lot to do with things. According to Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson, “these barrels are just at the right point to highlight the beautiful nuances of a great rye whiskey.” And nuanced is the perfect way to describe this single barrel rye whiskey, which is impressively approachable at barrel proof. The aroma is equal parts toasted oak and pie spice with a thick lacing of dark vanilla bean and subtler notes of herbs and dark cherry. The palate is rich with a silky, dark caramel sweetness balanced against fresh black pepper and spice cabinet notes. The finish is long and warming with clove and muddled mint. A great rye whiskey, indeed.
