Vermont Cheese Takes Top Honors at 2022 American Cheese Society Competition

The American Cheese Society (ACS) has announced winners for its 2022 judging and competition. “Whitney,” a Raclette-style cheese from Jasper Hill Farms of Greensboro Bend, VT, was named First Place “Best of Show.” (feature photo above). As a nod to the dairy’s team spirit, this cheese was named after Tim Whitney—Jasper Hill’s longest-standing Team Member.

Two cheeses tied for Second Place Best of Show: “Flagsheep,” a semi-hard cow’s milk cheese, and “Bamboozle,” a washed rind goat and cow’s milk cheese from Goat Rodeo Farm & Dairy of Allison Park, PA. The Third Place Best of Show went to Greensward, a soft-ripened washed rind cheese from the collaboration of the Cellars at Jasper Hill Farms of Greensboro, VT, and Murray’s Cheese of Long Island City, NY.

The four “Best of Show” Cheeses are among the 380 total awards given at the ceremony – 116 gold medals, 130 silver medals, and 133 bronze medals among 136 organizations.

The ACS’ Judging & Competition is the largest event of its kind for American-made cheeses. Cheeses in 120 different categories were submitted to be judged by an esteemed panel of 30 judges who convened May 19-20 at the Huntington Bank Stadium at the University of Minnesota. Medal winners were announced during the American Cheese Society’s annual conference held July 20-23 in Portland, Oregon. This was the Society’s first gathering in three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the first in-person judging

The 2022 event received nearly 1387 entries in 120 categories. Competing entries represented 35 U.S. states, four Canadian provinces, Mexico, and Brazil. The ACS awarded 433 awards, including 139 gold medals, 143 silver medals, and 151 bronze medals. See a complete list of winners here: “ACS competition winners”.
