The Heart of Truffle Country

Since ancient times, this fine delicacy has been surrounded by mystery and exclusivity. Some say it was the result of the fury of Jupiter’s thunderbolts striking down on Earth, others claim it was a centerpiece of witchcraft. No matter the legend surrounding them, these little treasures of delight win our hearts in every dish.

When you think of truffles, what country comes to your mind? For me, Italy is a clear winner. In 2021, UNESCO recognized the Italian truffle as an “Intangible Heritage of Humanity.”

And of course, we all heard of the town of Alba – one of the major cradles with its big fairs and festivities every fall.

Today, however, I will share with you another location in Italy that is just as rich, yet where the celebration of truffles feels more local and authentic.

Sant’Agata Feltria, Emilia-Romagna, Italy

Located in Romagna, only 40 minutes from Rimini, is a small medieval village of Sant’Agata Feltria. As you get closer, magnificent views open up of a town that feels like a fairytale, complete with a castle. Known as one of Italy’s “città del tartufo” or “city of truffle,” Sant’Agata Feltria is also the founder of Italy’s Association Città del Tartufo.

National White Truffles Fair

Being one of Italy’s truffle cities, Sant’Agata Feltria naturally holds its own annual truffle fair. Every October, local truffle producers gather to celebrate, promote, and sell their prized products while building connections within the community.

This year marked the 40th edition of the fair, organized by Aps Pro-Loco of Sant’Agata Feltria. The main theme, “Truffle: The Best in the Realm,” paid tribute to Disney’s 100th Anniversary with a nod to Snow White’s famous mirror scene. Every Sunday in October, the town fills with over 160 stands of local produce, along with families and professionals sharing their love of truffles through various activities. Some of the highlights include:

Truffle Dog Race. Did you know that in December 2021 Italian Truffle Hunting received recognition from UNESCO? And yes, at this very fair you get to witness this sacred tradition as professionally trained dogs are at their job; hunting for the areas where the king of the woods grows. It is certainly an experience you don’t want to miss, ending with the crowning of the fair’s top dog.

Wine Tour. Wine has become the perfect companion to almost everything in the world of gastronomy. No exception here too. The festival counts with a wine alley offering you the opportunity to taste a variety of products from local wineries.

White Truffle Restaurant Showcase: In a dedicated area four restaurants from the region demonstrate how just one little product with its exquisite flavor can be a game-changer in your gastronomic journey. Whether you are a chef, a restaurant owner, or simply a foodie, this food court full of local truffle dishes will truly inspire you.

The truffle stands surprise you with a variety of offerings, from fresh truffles to dried spices, pastes, oils, and creams, sure to satisfy any taste.

Apart from the guest of honor, you could find other local products such as cheese (World Cheese Award’s Pecorino was there too), hams, baked goods, grains, and vegetables – a perfect chance to purchase everything you need for dinner or to find new contacts for your business.

One of the many highlights of this event was also the Piazzetta of natural organic products and herbs, where you could watch local artisans at work, creating their masterpieces be it from metal, clay, or wood.

Whether you are a professional in the field, or someone passionate about gastronomy, this unique immersive experience will bring you joy and deepen your knowledge of the ancient aphrodisiac (as to be said) while exposing you to the very true to the roots Italian atmosphere of the medieval town of Sant’Agata Feltria – Romagna’s best kept secret.
